Chalong is the residential area that links town with the southern beaches

Chalong is in the south of Mueang Phuket district. Its centre is Chalong Circle, the five-way roundabout where Chao Fa East Road, Chao Fa West Road, Wiset Road down to Rawai, Patak Road over the hill to Kata and the road to Chalong Pier all meet. The land in Chalong has three levels: the flat shore of Chalong Bay to the east, the central plain around Wat Chalong and Chao Fa Road, and the lower slopes of Nakkerd Hill to the west, on the way up to the Big Buddha. Homes at each level meet different weather.

Three kinds of home found in Chalong

Pool villas in the side lanes. The lanes off Chao Fa Road and Patak Road contain one- and two-storey villas with swimming pools, enclosed by high walls for privacy. Many belong to foreign owners or are let by the month. Local detached houses and small estates. Around Wat Chalong and along Chao Fa Road are long-established family houses, garden homes on large plots and small housing estates. These homes tend to have a broad tile roof, a long fence and walls that have been painted over many times.

Houses and villas on the lower slopes. The road up Nakkerd Hill has homes built on sloping ground with a view over Chalong Bay. The downhill side is often one or two storeys taller than the front.

When should a tile roof in Chalong be repainted?

A great many detached houses in Chalong have concrete or profiled tile roofs that have been in place for years. Looking down from the Big Buddha road, the roofs of the whole district are on view, and a faded or stained one is obvious. The signs that a roof is due for repainting are:

1. the colour has gone patchy, or has faded enough to show the bare tile
2. black or green algae sits in the tile channels and on the side shaded by trees
3. the ridge caps and the eaves edge are peeling ahead of everything else

Foothill houses, damp and surrounded by large trees, stain sooner than houses on the plain. Roof work means washing, drying, priming and top-coating on days without rain. How does Chalong Bay affect paint differently from the Andaman beaches?

Chalong Bay faces south-east. Cape Panwa and the offshore islands shelter it from wind and waves, which is why boats moor there and why Chalong Pier stretches far out over the water. Homes on the bay shore and near the pier receive salt air steadily, yet less fiercely than a beach where waves break directly. The visible results are rust on gates and window grilles, and chalky exterior paint on the side turned to the bay.

Homes in the centre, around Wat Chalong, are further from the shore, and their main issue shifts to sun and rain. Homes on Nakkerd Hill stand high and catch strong wind in the monsoon, so rain hits their west walls harder than it hits the houses below.

How do traffic at Chalong Circle and the villa lanes affect scheduling?
