Paklok is a sub-district on the east side of Thalang district, reached by heading east from the Heroines Monument roundabout. Its shoreline is calm bays, mudflats and mangrove, not surf beaches of sand like the Andaman coast. The places people know are Ao Po, a pier with a marina, Bang Rong Pier, Cape Yamu, and Bang Pae Waterfall in the Khao Phra Thaeo hills. Homes in the long-established villages

Several old communities are spread along the main road and the roads to the piers. Houses are mostly one- or two-storey masonry, part-masonry and part-timber, or timber on stilts, alongside shops, seafood restaurants and community buildings such as mosques and schools. The Paklok shore has no surf throwing salt spray as the west-coast beaches do, yet the bay air is still salty and very humid. A house near the mangroves sits in damp air all year. Lower walls, boundary walls and any wall the breeze does not reach turn green and black. An east wall facing the bay catches the sun from early morning, so that side fades first. An Andaman-side house fades on the west instead.

Painters in Paklok therefore concentrate on washing the wall and treating mould on the surface, letting it dry fully, priming to suit the substrate and applying exterior top coats.
