House and Villa Painters in Nai Harn
Phuket Pro Painters paints villas and houses in Nai Harn, the small valley in south-west Phuket that holds Nai Harn lake and Nai Harn Beach. Villas here use a great deal of timber in decks, salas and screens, which sun, monsoon rain and damp wear down fast. The team travels in for a free survey and measurement.

Nai Harn is a valley with a lake in the middle and a beach at the end
Nai Harn belongs to Rawai sub-district and lies west of Promthep Cape. Its defining feature is a bowl of land with hills on three sides. In the centre is Nai Harn lake, a freshwater lake where people walk and jog. Beyond the lake are Nai Harn Beach and the temple, Wat Nai Harn. Ao Sane is just north of the beach; Ya Nui Beach and the windmill viewpoint are to the south. Painters in Nai Harn work in a smaller and quieter area than most zones in our list of painting service areas in Phuket, and nearly all the properties are homes, not large buildings.
How do Nai Harn villas differ from villas elsewhere?
Nai Harn villas divide into two groups by position.
The first group stands on the flat ground around the lake and in the lanes that come across from the Rawai side. These are single-storey pool villas in tropical gardens, with a perimeter wall, mature trees and a pool. They are pleasantly shaded and also damp. North-facing walls, and walls beside a line of trees, commonly carry green and black staining.
The second group sits on the hills above Nai Harn Beach and along the way to Ao Sane. These are multi-level houses facing the Andaman Sea. Nai Harn Beach looks south-west, the same direction the monsoon wind blows from between about May and October. Hill houses take wind, driven rain and salt in full during those months.
Both groups share a tropical design language: tall roofs, deep overhanging eaves and plenty of wood. The painting scope for homes of this type is described under painting for villas and holiday homes.
Why does villa timber in Nai Harn age quickly, and how is it cared for?
The exterior wood found on Nai Harn villas includes pool decking, open-sided salas, sun screens, timber doors and windows, fascia boards and timber soffits under the eaves. Three forces act on that wood together. Strong sun dries the surface and bleaches it grey. Rain makes the wood swell and shrink in turn. The moist valley air encourages black mould on the surface.
There are two main ways to finish exterior timber.
Option | Result | Suits |
|---|---|---|
Translucent wood stain | Grain stays visible; the colour soaks into the surface | Decks, salas and screens where the wood is still attractive |
Opaque paint | Grain fully hidden; an even colour | Old, badly blotched wood, or fascias meant to match the walls |
Either way, the job starts by washing off mould, sanding the fuzzy layer back to firm wood and waiting for the timber to dry. Coating wood that is still damp is the leading cause of early peeling, so exterior timber is scheduled for a run of days without rain. The complete steps are under wood staining and timber painting. Rotten boards or an unsound deck frame go to a carpenter before any finishing.
Lake damp or beach wind: which does more harm to paint in Nai Harn?
The answer depends on where the house stands.
- A house on the flat land by the lake is some distance from the beach, with hills and trees to break the wind, so salt is secondary. The principal trouble is walls that dry slowly, with algae and mould spreading over house walls and boundary walls. Preparation centres on washing and removing that growth before priming.
- A house on the hill or close to the beach meets the sea wind head on. Exterior paint fades and chalks quickly, and metal rusts. Preparation centres on rinsing off salt, removing rust and matching the primer to each surface.
Some houses face both conditions, with a front that takes the sea wind and a back set against a damp slope. The quotation then describes each side separately, because the level of preparation differs. Where a wall is wet because water is coming through from the earth bank behind or from the roof, that falls outside our scope: Phuket Pro Painters does not take on waterproofing and will advise finding a specialist first.
How narrow and steep is the way in to a Nai Harn house?
Only a few roads lead into Nai Harn: one from Rawai, one through Soi Saiyuan and one over the hill from Kata past the viewpoint. The road around the lake is a tight two-lane road. Many of the lanes into the villas are small concrete tracks where two pickups have to edge past each other. The climbs to the hill houses are steep, with hairpin bends.
For those reasons the painters always look at the site first. They need to know whether a vehicle can reach the gate, where scaffolding and paint tubs can be stored, and what scaffold or ladder suits the downhill wall. In high season the beach road is lined with visitors' parked cars, so materials are better delivered early in the morning.
What business premises are there in Nai Harn?
Nai Harn has small and mid-sized resorts and guest accommodation, plus restaurants and shops on the road around the lake. Work for those premises is timed to avoid disturbing guests. The scope is set out under painting for commercial buildings and guest accommodation.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
- How often should the timber deck and poolside sala of a Nai Harn villa be re-stained?
- There is no fixed figure. Timber species, the product used and how much sun and rain the wood receives all matter. Signs that the time has come are wood turning grey, a dry, fuzzy surface, or water no longer beading on it.
- Why does algae grow so quickly on houses around Nai Harn lake?
- The land around the lake is the low floor of a valley, with water and many trees. The air is humid and walls dry slowly, above all on sides that get no sun. The growth has to be washed off before priming and repainting.
- Can scaffolding be put up at a villa on the hill above Nai Harn Beach?
- In many cases, yes, although sloping ground and a tight entrance call for a specially levelled base. The painter checks the ground at the survey and lists scaffolding as a separate item in the quotation.
