Painting in the Rainy Season in Phuket: What Works and What Should Wait

Painting in the rainy season in Phuket is possible. Interior work can go ahead all season with extra drying time. Exterior work needs a dry spell and a fully dry wall, must stop when rain is on the way, and the owner has to accept that the job will pause from time to time with the weather.

Can you paint a house in the rainy season?

Yes, painting in the rainy season is possible in Phuket, but interior and exterior work have to be treated separately. Interior painting can go ahead throughout the rainy season with extra time allowed for drying. Exterior painting can only be done during dry spells, on walls that are completely dry, and must not start when rain is on the way. The owner also has to accept that the work will stop and start with the weather. The one rule that cannot be skipped is never to paint a wall that is still damp. This guide is part of the house painting guides for Phuket's climate.

Phuket receives the south-west monsoon from roughly May to October. Rain is heavy and at times falls for several days in a row. The rainy season does not mean rain every day, however. Runs of several clear days usually come in between, and those clear runs are the opportunity for exterior work. Owners who live abroad and visit in the dry months often want maintenance done while the house is empty in the wet months, which is workable with the right plan.

What problems do rain and humidity cause for paint?

Water-based acrylic paint dries as its water evaporates and has to bond to a dry wall. When the weather does not cooperate, the problems below appear.

Problem

Cause

How to prevent the problem

Paint washed into streaks or patches

Rain before the film is dry enough

Watch the forecast and stop when rain is near

Blistering and peeling in sheets

Painting over a wall with moisture inside

Wait for a fully dry wall and check moisture first

Sticky runs or white streaks

Dew or drizzle on a film that has not hardened

Paint from morning to early afternoon so the paint dries before evening

Slow drying and dust sticking

High humidity in the air

Leave a longer interval between coats than usual

Mould and algae returning quickly

Wall not washed clean, or old growth painted over

Wash and treat the mould first, then let the wall dry

Most of these problems do not show on the day of painting. They appear weeks or months later. Rushing to finish before the rain is not worth the touch-up work that follows.

Which painting jobs can be done in the rainy season, and which should wait?

Can interior painting be done all through the rainy season?

Yes. Interior walls are not exposed to rain. The difference from the dry season is that paint dries more slowly, so the painter should leave longer between coats and use fans or air conditioning to lower the humidity. The rainy season is therefore a good time to finish the interior and leave the exterior for clear weather.

When can exterior walls be painted?

Exterior walls can be painted when the wall is completely dry and no rain is expected until the paint has dried enough. How long a paint must dry before rain depends on the product, so rely on what the paint manufacturer states on the label. Walls under deep eaves, or on the side that driving rain does not reach, are easier than walls that face the monsoon wind directly. The scope of work is described on the exterior painting service in Phuket page.

Should roof painting wait for the dry season?

Roof work is affected by rain more than any other job, because the roof surface takes the full rain and working on a wet, slippery roof is dangerous. Roof painting is generally best planned for the dry season, or for a run of several clear days. Details are on the roof painting service page.

Can exterior timber and steel be painted?

Exterior steel and timber need a dry surface too. On steel that is wet or covered in dew, anti-rust primer bonds poorly. On damp timber, wood stain soaks in unevenly. Items that can be removed, such as door leaves, can be moved under cover and painted there.

How does a painter check that a wall is dry enough to paint?

A rendered masonry wall soaks rain into the render. The surface can look dry within a few hours of the sun coming out while the inside is still damp, so a painter should not judge by eye alone. Common methods are a wall moisture meter, looking for render that is darker than normal, which indicates damp, and checking how much rain fell over the previous two or three days. For the moisture level that is acceptable before painting, follow the paint manufacturer's guidance.

A wall that stays damp even when no rain has fallen is a different matter. Ring-shaped water stains, paint that blisters repeatedly in one place, or white salts coming out of the wall are signs that water is entering from somewhere else. Painting over the wall does not solve the cause. Phuket Pro Painters does not take on waterproofing, structural crack repair or leak repair. A specialist has to fix that kind of problem and the wall has to dry before our painters can start.

How do you plan a painting job in Phuket's monsoon?

  1. Split the job in two. Interior work can start straight away; exterior work waits for clear weather.
  2. Agree with the painter from the start that the completion date for exterior work is flexible with the weather, and that no painting is done on rainy days.
  3. Have the walls washed and the surface prepared in advance, so painting can begin as soon as the walls are dry.
  4. Start painting in the morning after the dew has dried, and stop in the afternoon, so the paint has time to dry before the evening showers that are common in the monsoon.
  5. Finish one side of the house at a time, primer and top coats together, instead of opening every side at once.
  6. Begin with the sides that have eaves or do not face the rain-bearing wind.
  7. After heavy rain, leave a day or more for the wall to dry before resuming, even if the sun is out.

Phuket's west coast faces the monsoon wind from the Andaman Sea. The beach strip from Kata and Karon through Patong to Bang Tao usually gets more driving rain and stronger wind than the inner part of the island. Houses along that strip should allow extra time for exterior work.

Does primer matter more than usual in the rainy season?

Yes. Primer helps the top coat bond to the wall, and a primer for new render blocks the alkalinity of the render, which has a stronger effect when the wall holds moisture. Skipping primer to finish before the rain is a saving that usually ends in peeling paint. What each type of primer does is explained in the guide to priming and the number of coats.

What extra care does a house near the sea need in the monsoon?

The monsoon wind carries more sea spray and salt ashore than at other times of year. Salt deposited on a wall attracts moisture and weakens the bond of the paint. The walls of a house near the sea must therefore be washed with fresh water and left to dry before every painting session. More detail is in the guide to sea air and the durability of house paint.

Does painting in the rainy season cost more?

Painting rates do not depend directly on the season. What may change is a longer job, and more surface preparation if algae and mould have built up on the walls. Surface preparation and scaffolding are quoted as separate lines. Estimated rates are on the painting prices in Phuket page.

Phuket Pro Painters carries out the free on-site survey and measurement in every season and issues a written quotation before work starts, every time. A survey in the rainy season has one advantage: the walls that take the rain and the walls that stay damp are easy to see.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will rain ruin exterior paint that has just been applied?
If rain falls before the paint film is dry enough, the paint can be washed into streaks or left patchy and will need touching up once the wall is dry. How long a product must dry before rain is stated by the paint manufacturer on the label, so painters should stop when rain is approaching.
How long after rain stops can exterior painting start?
The wall has to be completely dry, at the surface and within the render, which depends on how much rain fell and on the sun and wind. A wall that took heavy driving rain may need several days. The painter should check the moisture in the wall before starting.
Is interior painting a problem during the rainy season?
Interior work can be done throughout the rainy season, but paint dries more slowly in humid air. Allow a longer interval between coats and use fans, air conditioning or a dehumidifier.
Which months suit exterior painting in Phuket?
The dry season, roughly November to April, suits exterior work better because there is little rain and walls are dry. During the monsoon, roughly May to October, work is still possible in dry spells but needs more time.
